Retard Strength Dodgeball:
I've read about "RS" in Newsweek and Time - what is it?
Retard Strength (or "RS") is a mental state that permits a
person to crush the barriers inhibiting the all-out physical
reaction required in certain confusing situations (wrong
Happy Meal, lost luggage, nighttime).
Often referred to as "all fight, no flight", RS temporarily
eradicates all social norms, fear, reason and physical
limitations. If you need to call on your body's enormous
physical reserves, in that cold sweat,
eyes-rolling-back-in-your-head, crazed-grunting sort of way,
then you need Retard Power.

The Wal-Mart Myth: And there it is in a nutshell. In today's economy (or, for that matter, yesterday's economy), whether a company treats its workers fairly and satisfies consumers does not matter to Wall Street. Stock analysts don't reward such a feat—preferring instead that a company conform to Wall Street standards by wringing out every cent from regular people's wallets.

Ojoyoshu - or - Another Day in Paradise: "While on a car trip to examine these places we saw a big red devil next to the street, but didn't stopped. Much later I found out that this place fits perfectly into my collection and we went there again for some closer investigation.
The Izu Gokurakuen, loosely translated as 'Heaven Park' is a family owned collection of selfmade dioramas based on the book Ojoyoshu (The Essentials of Salvation) written by a buddhist monk named Genshin (942-1017). It describes in gruesome detail how sinners are ranked and placed into different hells in descending order according to their sins, while only pure souls are able to reach 'Pure Land'.
Please research the full story about Ojoyoshu yourself or stay here and, uhm, enjoy the pictures."

Wired News: First Foreigners, Then Americans: "When Congress passed the Patriot Act in 2001, it granted law enforcement authorities unprecedented surveillance powers. Lawmakers approved the act not only because of the crisis of 9/11, but because it was aimed primarily at foreign nationals.
Most Americans believed the powers would never be applied to them, according to Georgetown University law professor David Cole. But Cole says history shows that once the American government goes after foreigners, it's only a matter of time before it turns the same laws on Americans."

Boing Boing: Thin models boost self-image?: "A University of Toronto study posits that most young women who are exposed to media images of thin models are actually inspired in a positive way. 'Our findings suggest that these images may actually make young women feel good about themselves because they treat that image as a fantasy goal, thinking, She looks great and I could look like that, too,' says psychology professor Peter Herman, co-author of the study. Before you call BS though, know that Herman then adds that 'young women who are really super-invested in trying to emulate this image may be the ones who go on to develop a true eating disorder.'
'The idea that these thin media ideals are inspiring rather than depressing is almost necessary to account for the fact that young women - and just about everybody else - spend a lot of time voluntarily exposing themselves to these images,' he says. "

Black Bean Recipes: "The North American Indians made patties of black beans and cornmeal, cooking them over campfires. I've added brown rice to give them more substance, though the Native Americans on the plains would have used wild rice. For a main dish, you can make or buy a mushroom gravy to serve over the patties, serving with a green vegetable and salad. Uncooked patties can be wrapped in wax paper and frozen, then for a quick meal you can defrost and fry or grill. This is a nice way to use up leftover rice or beans, but you can also cook some for the occasion. For breakfast, you can serve with warm maple syrup. "
Boing Boing: Criticism in Japan for "Lost in Translation": "Criticism in Japan for 'Lost in Translation'
Interesting piece in the Christian Science Monitor on reactions in Japan to the film Lost in Translation -- which is evidently not translating so well.
[T]he film is under attack for cultural bias, and for maximizing its humor by depicting Japanese as robotic and cartoon-like. The question is: to what degree is the film insensitive - and to what extent is this the kind of 'poking fun' that some ethnic groups now ignore? Until now, none of these voices or questions has come from Japan. Indeed, while 'Lost in Translation' opened all over the world last fall, it opened in image-conscious Tokyo only last weekend. Some sources say this is deliberate. Japanese decorum on culturally sensitive matters precludes angry protest or high-volume misgivings about images that might be considered unfair or 'unpleasant,' to use a local reviewer's term. But it is telling that the Academy-award-winning 'valentine' can be seen here only in a small 300-seat theater in Shibuya, and critics warn that the film may hurt the feelings of ordinary Japanese."

Mae was killed this spring in a territorial battle with another falcon at an Xcel Energy smokestack in Oak Park Heights, about 20 miles east of St. Paul. President Gives Tour of Crawford Ranch: " Q When you have those business meetings, like the Joint Chiefs briefing, do you like to keep it separate from the living quarters on the ranch?

: "'Body Breaks,' Devendra Banhart, from 'Rejoicing in the Hands'
Devendra Banhart is only 21, and 'Rejoicing in the Hands' is only his second album, but he's already a legend, and those who have been exposed to his music tend to speak of him with reverence and awe. It probably helps that he looks uncannily like the conventional image of Jesus, but there's more to it than that. He has most often been compared to Syd Barrett, but I think this is less due to the way his music sounds than to the otherworldly, brilliant but unstable aura he projects as a performer. Banhart's music, most of it solo guitar and voice, isn't musically groundbreaking, but emotionally, it's unfamiliar terrain. He has a thing for obscure British folk musicians like Linda Perhacs and Vashti Banyan (who sings on one track on this album), and his angular guitar style recalls the great Burt Jansch. But vocally, he's his own man. Before I ever heard his music, I'd heard descriptions of his warbly voice and trembling vibrato and was reasonably sure I wouldn't like it -- few things turn me off as quickly as excessive vibrato. But the moment I heard him sing, I was sold. The vibrato is pretty intense, but it's also entirely natural and unforced, and perfectly controlled. Like Jeff Buckley, Banhart, without a trace of self-consciousness, does things with his voice that would sound absurd attempted by anyone else, and he makes them work by virtue of unshakable artistic convic"

Best known as the burial place of Karl Marx, Highgate is a magnificent, decrepit (many of the crypts were damaged in the Blitz) boneyard, and the tours offered on the west side are spectacular (despite the notably unfriendly demeanor and shrill demands for donations from the woman who was working the gate -- I'm happy to donate money to the charitable trust that maintains the place, but I'm not thrilled about having my arm twisted, nor about being made to physically show that my cellphone has been switched off before I was admitted past the gates). Salon Must Reads: "Carter: Why the Christian Right is wrong
In a Q and A with The American Prospect, former President Jimmy Carter, the first evangelical Christian in the White House, explains what isn't Christian about the Christian Right.
Carter says: 'When I was younger, almost all Baptists were strongly committed on a theological basis to the separation of church and state. It was only 25 years ago when there began to be a melding of the Republican Party with fundamentalist Christianity, particularly with the Southern Baptist Convention. This is a fairly new development, and I think it was brought about by the abandonment of some of the basic principles of Christianity. First of all, we worship the prince of peace, not war. And those of us who have advocated for the resolution of international conflict in a peaceful fashion are looked upon as being unpatriotic, branded that way by right-wing religious groups, the Bush administration, and other Republicans.'
'Secondly, Christ was committed to compassion for the most destitute, poor, needy, and forgotten people in our society. Today there is a stark difference [between conservative ideology and Christian teaching] because most of the people most strongly committed to the Republican philosophy have adopted the proposition that help for the rich is the best way to help even poor people (by letting some of the financial benefits drip down to those most deeply in need). I would say there has been a schism drawn -- on theology and pra"
