Wired News: Loser Delivers Laughs: "In the struggle between humanity and technology, humanity is clearly getting its ass kicked.
That is the conclusion one comes to after reading Rick Broadhead's Dear Valued Customer, You Are a Loser ($10, Andrews McMeel Publishing), a hilarious look at the maddening tendency for technology to create as many problems as it solves.

Published in May with little fanfare, the 315-page paperback is a compilation of more than 100 true stories of technological blunder and misfortune. Some of the stories are bizarre, some are pathetic -- but all are highly entertaining.

Take, for instance, the case of the Ukrainian businessman who put 50 new pagers -- a gift for his employees -- in the back seat of his car and then promptly crashed into a lamppost when they all began beeping at the same time. The culprit? A welcome message sent by the pager company to each of the pagers.

Then there's the story of the German couple who carefully followed the driving directions given by their car's satellite navigation system -- right up until it guided them into a river."
Internet Gives Teenage Bullies Weapons to Wound From Afar: "For instance, last spring, when an eighth-grade girl at Horace Mann School in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, sent a digital video of herself masturbating to a male classmate on whom she had a crush, it quickly appeared on a file-sharing network that teenagers use to trade music. Hundreds of New York private school students saw the video, in which the girl's face was clearly visible, and it was available to a worldwide audience of millions.

Students would go online at school while the girl was there and watch it, said one student from another school, who declined to be named. Horace Mann officials did not reply to requests for comment this week, but the student newspaper reported at the time that the school had set up out-of-school counseling for the students directly involved and held assemblies to discuss issues of sexuality and communication.

The incident is not an isolated one. In June, a video showing two Scarsdale High School freshman girls in a sexual encounter, apparently taking direction from boys in the background, prompted an investigation by the Westchester County district attorney's office when a parent reported that students were sending it to each other by e-mail. A nude picture of a 15-year-old in Wycoff, N.J., taken with a camera phone, is still circulating after she sent it by e-mail it to her boyfriend and he forwarded it to his friends, other students said.

Online lists rating a school's girls as "hottest" "ugliest" or "most boring" are common. One that surfaced at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, N.Y., a few years ago, listed names, phone numbers and what were said to be the sexual exploits of dozens of girls."

Doing a Lynddie
The Great Scam: "This is a story of deception, intrigue, and doublecrossing. It is a story of liars, bandits, and greed. It is a story of the worst of the human condition, and how the motive for profit will drive a normally nice guy to the deepest depths of evil and betrayal."

Don't call me nigger, limey: "The British Broadcasting Corporation has outraged many in the United Kingdom's black and African populations by putting to air a newsmagazine show entitled The Trouble with Black Men. The three part documentary explores the calamaties that befall many black Britons such as low educational performance and crime. Though not everyone is happy with the BBC's brazen use of statistics to paint a bleak picture of black life in the U.K., Celia Taylor of the BBC defended the network's ethics, pointing out that the Commission of Racial Equality had approved the telefilm and that her organization had an legitimate journalistic agenda: "If you don't ask the questions, how do we start addressing these issues?""

NPR : Dancehall Reggae Artist Under Fire for Anti-Gay Lyrics: "Jamaican dancehall reggae star Beenie Man has embarked on a U.S. tour to support his new album. Even though dancehall is an established genre in Jamaica and other regions of the world, Beenie Man is hoping to crack the U.S. market. Despite a glowing profile in The Washington Post, he may have a problem: His homophobic lyrics led Scotland Yard to intercept him at Heathrow Airport last month for questioning, and a London club cancelled a show for fear of protests by gay rights groups. Activists are calling for cancellation of Friday's show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Pa. Of particular concern is the song 'Bad Man Chi Chi Man,' which critics say incites audiences to kill gays. Joel Rose of member station WHYY, reports."

American Psychological Association Petition - Point of View: "On July 28th, the American Psychological Association (APA) issued a press release stating the following;
“APA supports legalization of same-sex civil marriages and opposes discrimination against lesbian and gay parents.

Denying same-sex couples legal access to civil marriage is discriminatory and can adversely affect the psychological, physical, social and economic well-being of gay and lesbian individuals”

This decision ignores the scientific research proving that homosexual men and women are less “psychologically healthy” than heterosexuals and shows that the APA allowed “politics”: to rule in this case, by allowing political activists to influence this endorsement.

Please sign the petition below urging the APA to reverse their position supporting same-sex marriage and homosexual adoption."

The New York Times > National > Young Japanese-Americans Honor Ethnic Roots: "Gil Asakawa, author of 'Being Japanese American,' said a reason some young Japanese-Americans are asserting their ethnic identity might be that it has become cool to be Japanese.

'Japanese culture is hip in American mainstream, so the door has been opened for these Japanese-Americans to embrace the culture more,'' said Mr. Asakawa, who said he was jolted into consciousness about his heritage by the death of his father in the early 1990's.

But even as Japan's exports like anime and karaoke, not to mention its influences in food, technology and design, have become popular globally, many among the younger generations of Japanese-Americans say they are also looking in another direction, at what it means to be Japanese-American, not just of Japanese descent. Central to Japanese-American pride is surviving and thriving after the indignities of World War II.

'The culture and the traditional aspects go back to Japan, but I tend to look at the Japanese-American experience - my grandfather being in an internment camp,'' Ms. Cherry said. 'That's huge.''"
