NPR : Sex Education in Maine: Preventing Disease: "A new NPR/Kaiser/Kennedy School poll on sex education shows that while more than 90% of Americans approve of sex education in schools, they don't all agree on how it should be taught. Tijuana Bibles: "Tijuana Bibles were pornographic tracts popular in America before the advent of mass-market full-color glossy wank-fodder such as Playboy. A typical bible consisted of eight stapled comic-strip frames portraying characters and celebrities (eg. John Dillinger, Popeye, Disney characters) in wildly sodomistic situations. Many could be considered grossly racist, sexist, and otherwise wholly "politically incorrect." Browser discretion is advised."
In Online Auctions, Misspelling in Ads Often Spells Cash: "Such is the eBay underworld of misspellers, where the clueless — and sometimes just careless — sell labtop computers, throwing knifes, Art Deko vases, camras, comferters and saphires.

They do get bidders, but rarely very many. Often the buyers are those who troll for spelling slip-ups, buying items on the cheap and selling them all over again on eBay, but with the right spelling and for the right price. John H. Green, a jeweler in Central Florida, is one of them."

It leads them to take risks.'"

Why Do Men Barbecue? -- Recipes for Cultural Psychology -- Richard A. Shweder: "Comparisons of cultures have become a trend throughout the social sciences. However, within anthropology, the discipline traditionally known for its study of culture, there are profound debates about this pursuit. In his opening chapter, Richard Shweder offers an insightful and helpful overview of the different schools of thought regarding the meaning and aims of the study of culture. For his own part, Shweder rejects the narrative of progress, which has seen a burst of popularity in recent years. More specifically, he challenges those who argue that the adoption of Western values leads to progress and freedom. Instead Shweder argues for what he terms a “postmodern humanism” or “romantic pluralism.” "
Marketplace Morning Report for January 21, 2004: "In last night's State of the Union address, the president emphasized new initiatives in domestic policy, including tax credits for health care coverage, increased job training, and a call to make the tax cuts he championed, permanent. But commentator Robert Reich says just talking about domestic issues doesn't pay for them. "

IRC BIBLE: "The Bible. A book of many wonders. Only a few of them properly understood.
Which parts are true? Which parts are allegory? No-one really knows, as no-one was there at the scene.
Of course, centuries of theologians have pondered the meaning of it all, and the Dead Sea Scrolls gave us a glimpse of how it really was...
But, we never seemed to grasp the essence.
Some took the Scripture litterally, but wandered off from the spirit of the Words.
Others took the Book of Books with a grain of salt, yet lost touch with mere wonder of our Faith.
For centuries, humanity has been lost and wandering...
Till one day, early 2004, someone typed in the right words in the mother of all search engines...

And stumbled on to:

The original IRC logs to the bible.

Some of them have been put up on this website, while others are still being decrypted."

The readings covered such areas as the spread of AIDS-causing HIV in the Spanish-speaking world; the cultural context for the spread of the virus in Latin America; how the intervention of the Roman Catholic church clerical community resulted in abandonment of some efforts to encourage the use of condoms; and a comparison of the success of the AIDS fight in Spain and Latin America."

My brother Marc takes this software seriously as an audio-visual performance instrument. Balls fall from the top of the screen and bounce off the lines you are drawing with the mouse. The balls make a percussive and melodic sound, whose pitch depends on how fast the ball is moving when it hits the line."

MEXICO: Birth control: "Catholic bishops attacked her for advocating the use of condoms to prevent HIV infections, calling her comments 'depraved,' Agence France-Presse reported. Marta Sahagun called on Mexico's citizens to use condoms and to educate each other about safer sex. Two leading bishops denounced Sahagun for her comments. 'In fact, many millions of people are infected with AIDS because of the propaganda surrounding condoms,' said the bishop of Tlaxcala, Jacinto Guerrero. Under pressure from the Catholic Church, the political party headed by Sahagun's husband, President Vicente Fox, recently dropped language from its political platform calling for condom use to prevent HIV infection. The word 'condom' had previously appeared in the party's manifesto. "
2001_2_Mexico: human rights: "Mexico is classified as a country with overall low HIV prevalence, but with a high HIV prevalence and growth concentrated among sub-sectors of the population. An estimated 15% of men who have sex with men (MSM) and 6% of injecting drug users are HIV-infected. Within the overall adult population (15-49 years), however, the prevalence is 0.29%. The first case of AIDS in Mexico was diagnosed in 1983. By the end of 2000, Mexico had 47,617 officially registered HIV/AIDS cases. More realistic estimates put the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) at 180,000."
AIDS and Anthropology: "The purpose of this seminar is to provide a broad base of information on HIV and AIDS using an anthropological perspective. An anthropological approach is useful for the study of the AIDS epidemic because it 1) focuses on the interactions between human biology and human behavior/culture, 2) draws attention to the importance of understanding the shared environment and evolutionary history of Homo sapiens with other primate species (for example, regarding the issue of the origins of HIV), and 3) utilizes detailed cross-cultural and ethnographic data obtained through fieldwork on human behavior and culture to understand what people do, how and why people do the things they do, and how educational, preventative, and curative measures might best be implemented to improve the health of both individuals and populations. In short, the biological, social, political, and personal factors associated with behavior and culture must all be considered in a comprehensive review of the AIDS epidemic."

How to Deconstruct Almost Anything: "So, what are we to make of all this? I earlier stated that my quest was to learn if there was any content to this stuff and if it was or was not bogus. Well, my assessment is that there is indeed some content, much of it interesting. The question of bogosity, however, is a little more difficult. It is clear that the forms used by academicians writing in this area go right off the bogosity scale, pegging my bogometer until it breaks. The quality of the actual analysis of various literary works varies tremendously and must be judged on a case-by-case basis, but I find most of it highly questionable. Buried in the muck, however, are a set of important and interesting ideas: that in reading a work it is illuminating to consider the contrast between what is said and what is not said, between what is explicit and what is assumed, and that popular notions of truth and value depend to a disturbingly high degree on the reader's credulity and willingness to accept the text's own claims as to its validity. Why I Hate Personal Weblogs: "Weblogs suck ass. What the fuck is up with this shit? Fuck. Who the fuck cares what these people think about oatmeal or what the UN did last week? Nobody! Who reads these weblogs? Nobody! Maybe fellow weblog authors read each others weblogs out of a sense of desperation...the feeling that if they read someone else's weblog, someone will read theirs. It's kindof like cooperative advertising too, people will cross-post, linking weblog entries to each other's weblogs. How fucking pathetic is that? I hate weblogs. There are so few reasons to keep a weblog, and so many of these are fucking stupid while so few of them are legitimately non-brainfucked. The problem of course, is people. In general, people are fucking stupid, so many of the things they do are fucking stupid. I fucking hate weblogs, they are so fucking stupid. "

Google Search: Hydrocephalus treatment
NEUROSURGERY://ON-CALL® Hydrocephalus: "Hydrocephalus can be treated in many ways. The problem can be treated directly (by removing the cause of CSF obstruction or overproduction if one can be found) or indirectly (by diverting the fluid buildup to somewhere else, typically into another body cavity by implanting a device known as a shunt that can divert the excess CSF away from the brain). The place into which the CSF is diverted is usually the peritoneal cavity (the area surrounding the abdominal organs). "

Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Liberation: why the working class? :: Alliance for Workers' Liberty :: For international working class solidarity and socialism.: "Much of this is about what happens when working people struggle. Take as an example the 1984/85 miners’ strike. Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) organised support for the strikers, holding collections around gay venues and taking pink minibuses to picket lines. Miners responded to this solidarity by championing lesbian and gay rights within the Labour Party and TUC, and by taking their banners to Pride."
